1857 vs 1812
The version you were told. And the one they printed first.
The Grimms revised their tales through seven editions over 45 years. What everyone knows comes from the last one, 1857. Six examples of what the first one says. In this edition you read them in the German the Grimms wrote.
Snow White
1857 A wicked stepmother sends a huntsman after her.
1812 Her own mother orders him to bring back her lungs and liver.
Hansel and Gretel
1857 A stepmother talks the father into abandoning them.
1812 Their mother walks them into the forest to die.
Rapunzel
1857 The witch finds out when Rapunzel lets it slip.
1812 The fairy finds out when Rapunzel's dress stops fitting around her belly.
Cinderella
1857 The slipper fits Cinderella and no one else.
1812 One sister cuts off her toe, the other her heel. The blood in the stocking gives them away.
How Children Played Butcher
1857 Gone. The brothers removed it after the first edition.
1812 Children playing butcher cut a little boy's throat and catch his blood for sausages.
The Frog King
1857 A kiss breaks the spell.
1812 The princess throws the frog against the wall as hard as she can.

Case binding, cream paper, and the woodcut plates sit flat and dark on the page. It looks like a book someone meant to keep.

Gift for my sister who teaches folklore. She said she had never held the first edition's tales in one volume. Now I have to buy another.

For October nights
Six tales the Grimms erased. Read them with the lights on.
None of these survived past the first edition, so almost no Grimm book on a shelf today has them. All six are in this one.
- The Murder Castle
- In the cellar an old woman sits scraping intestines and promises the girl hers are next.
- The Mother-in-Law
- The old queen orders her grandson slaughtered and served for dinner, in a brown sauce.
- The Children in Famine
- A starving mother tells her daughter she must kill her to have something to eat.
- The Hand with the Knife
- Her brothers cut off her lover’s hand with his own knife, and he is never seen again.
- The Okerlo
- A baby girl washes up on an island of man-eaters. The old one can’t wait for the wedding feast.
- Bluebeard
- One door in the castle she must never open. Of course she opens it.

Continued in the book, along with 155 more.
156 tales. 32 of them the Grimms later erased.
Every tale from both volumes, in the order first printed. The ones in red were removed after 1815 and are missing from nearly every Grimm edition on a shelf today.
Questions
- When will it arrive?
- Each copy is bound to order and ships from the USA within about a week. Most orders arrive within 2 to 3 weeks. We email you the day it ships.
- What is the free digital edition?
- The complete German text as a PDF and an EPUB, page for page the same as the hardcover, plates included. It unlocks on your confirmation page the moment payment completes.
- Is the audiobook included?
- The German edition comes with the German PDF and EPUB. The free English audiobook, 10 tales narrated in full, is included with the German + English set.
- Do you ship outside the USA?
- The hardcover ships to US addresses only. Readers anywhere can get the German digital edition, the same PDF and EPUB, for $14.95, delivered by email the moment you order.
- Does it work on Kindle?
- Yes. Send the EPUB to your Kindle with Amazon's Send to Kindle, or open it in Apple Books, Kobo or any e-reader. The PDF opens anywhere.
- How is this different from other Grimm books?
- Nearly every Grimm collection in print follows the 1857 seventh edition, which the brothers rewrote for children over 45 years. This is the 1812 and 1815 first edition, complete, including every tale they later removed, in the Grimms' own German.
- Which German text is this?
- The text of the first edition as printed in Berlin in 1812 and 1815, in its original spelling (seyn, Thor, daß). Nothing has been modernized, cut or explained away. The English edition follows the same text, so the set reads side by side.
- Can I read 1812 German?
- If you read German, yes. The spelling is older than today's and a few words have shifted, but the sentences are the Grimms' own and read easily aloud.
- Is it for children?
- It was collected for households, not nurseries. It contains violence and cruelty, and one antisemitic tale kept unaltered for completeness. Read it before you hand it on.
